  The Wine

Our vineyard manager, Doug Hill, has helped us select varietals that will thrive on our property. The rocky soil is an ideal environment for Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. However, the soil on the lower bench near the creek is somewhat sandier, and the climate is slightly cooler, making it a better fit for Sauvignon Blanc grapes. Also, the Sauvignon Blanc block is somewhat shaded during the day, while the Cabernet Sauvignon block receives more sunlight.

Finally, we decided to plant a half-acre each of Petit Verdot and Malbec, two Bordeaux varietals that are traditionally blended with Cabernet Sauvignon. Growing a small amount of those grapes will allow us to create a Cabernet using grapes exclusively from our property. The Petit Verdot and Malbec are expected to contribute deeper, more complex flavors to the Cabernet.

We have a total of 11 planted acres, and we expect to produce limited quantities of premium wine.

Because the land had never before been planted with grapes, we’ve had to experiment a little to find the clones and the rootstock that produce the best fruit. But our vineyard manager, Doug Hill, has the expertise to guide us through the process, and he has confidence in our vines.

“The family has such a beautiful site, and I think the wine quality is going to be really good,” he says.

We have now been through two harvests, and our vines are continuing to thrive.
